Dopamine is a neurotransmitter located in our Central Nervous System making it one of our most important neurotransmitters. Norepinephrine (another neurotransmitter in our CNS) is manufactured from dopamine. To demonstrate the importance of dopamine and norepinephrine even further, simply look at the drugs (medications) prescribe to our children diagnosed with ADHD, Dopamine, along with Norepinephrine, has come to be recognized as playing a large role in attention and focus. For people with ADD/ADHD, psychostimulant medications such as Ritalin/Concerta (methylphenidate), Dexedrine (dextroamphetamine), and Adderall (a racemic mixture of amphetamine salts) are prescribed to help increase levels of norepinephrine and dopamine. Strattera (atomoxetine), a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, is a unique ADD/ADHD medication, as it affects only norepinephrine, rather than dopamine. Normally we are not born with a "need" for any medical drug. If we just stop and think logically, we know that well before there were medical drugs . . . humans survived. The human brain is very capable of automatically manufacturing the quantity of chemicals it needs if it isgiven the raw materials (Nutrients From Foods) to do so! Dopamine is widespread in the brain as well as the rest of the nervous system. This neurotransmitter plays a critical role in the control of movement. It has a stimulating effect on the heart, the circulation, the rate of metabolism, and is able to mobilize many of the body's energy reserves. It helps to modulate brain activity, control coordination and movement, and regulate the flow of information to different areas of the brain. A massive disturbance of dopamine regulation in the brain can result in a person no longer being able to respond emotionally or express his or her feelings in an appropriate way
